Mpofu Speaks at Gala Dinner to Celebrate PABASA’s 5th Anniversary
The elegant ballroom of the Sandton Convention Center was buzzing with excitement on Friday evening as the Pan African Book Association of South Africa (PABASA) celebrated its 5th anniversary with a grand gala dinner. The event was attended by distinguished guests from the literary world, government officials, and book lovers from all corners of the country.
The highlight of the evening was the keynote address by renowned author and the president of PABASA, Mr. Mpofu. In his speech, Mpofu reflected on the journey of PABASA and its achievements over the past five years. He also highlighted the challenges faced by the association and the goals for the future.
As he took the stage, Mpofu was greeted with a thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the audience. It was a testament to his contribution to the literary world and his leadership of PABASA. In his opening remarks, he thanked everyone for their support and dedication towards the association’s cause.
“Tonight, we gather to celebrate PABASA’s 5th anniversary, and I am overwhelmed by the love and support shown by all of you. Together, we have achieved so much and have made a significant impact on the literary landscape of South Africa,” Mpofu said with pride.
He went on to talk about the association’s journey and how it has grown over the years. PABASA was founded in 2016 with a vision to promote African literature and authors. Since then, it has organized numerous events, workshops, and book fairs to encourage the reading culture in the country.
“We have come a long way since the inception of PABASA. Our mission was to create a platform for African authors to showcase their work and to inspire the next generation of writers. I am proud to say that we have achieved that and much more,” Mpofu said.
He also acknowledged the challenges faced by PABASA, especially during the ongoing pandemic. The closure of bookstores and the cancellation of events had a significant impact on the association’s activities. However, Mpofu praised the resilience and determination of PABASA’s team, who continued to find innovative ways to promote African literature.
“Our passion for literature and our commitment to PABASA’s cause kept us going even during the most challenging times. I am proud to say that we have emerged stronger and more determined to fulfill our mission,” Mpofu added.
The audience was captivated by Mpofu’s words, and his passion for literature was evident in every sentence he spoke. He also shared his vision for the future of PABASA, which includes expanding its reach to other African countries and collaborating with international literary organizations.
“As we embark on our next chapter, we want to spread our wings and reach more African countries. We also want to collaborate with international literary organizations to promote African literature on a global platform. With your support, I am confident that we can make this vision a reality,” Mpofu said with determination.
The gala dinner also featured a panel discussion with renowned authors, including PABASA’s vice-president, Ms. Nkosi. The discussion revolved around the importance of promoting African literature and the role of PABASA in achieving this goal. The panelists also shared their experiences and challenges as African authors.
The evening concluded with a special performance by a local poet, who mesmerized the audience with his powerful words and thought-provoking poems. Guests were also treated to a delicious dinner and had the opportunity to network and connect with fellow book lovers.
