LIVE: Funeral service of struggle stalwart Dennis Neer

Struggle stalwart and former MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Dennis Neer, was laid to rest on Saturday, 10th of July 2021. The funeral service, held at the Durban City Hall, was attended by family, friends, colleagues, and political leaders who came to pay their last respects to a man who dedicated his life to the fight for freedom and justice.

Neer, who passed away at the age of 72, was a well-respected figure in the political landscape of KwaZulu-Natal. He was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and played a crucial role in the struggle against apartheid. He was also a member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and served as the MEC for Community Safety and Liaison in KwaZulu-Natal from 2009 to 2014.

During his tenure as MEC, Neer worked tirelessly to improve the safety and security of the people of KwaZulu-Natal. He was a firm believer in community policing and worked closely with the police and community members to address crime and violence in the province. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Community Safety Forums, which brought together community members, police, and government officials to work together in creating safer communities.

Neer was known for his unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy and social justice. He was a strong advocate for the rights of the marginalized and fought against any form of discrimination. He was also a champion for the rights of women and children and worked towards creating a society where they could live without fear of violence and abuse.

His dedication to the struggle for freedom and justice was recognized by many, and he received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions. In 2014, he was awarded the Order of Mendi for Bravery in Silver by President Jacob Zuma for his role in the liberation struggle.

At his funeral, tributes poured in from all corners of the country, with many describing Neer as a selfless leader who always put the needs of others before his own. His daughter, Thandi Neer, spoke fondly of her father, saying, “He was a man of integrity, a man of principle, and a man of great courage. He taught us to always stand up for what is right and to never give up in the face of adversity.”

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Sihle Zikalala, also paid tribute to Neer, saying, “He was a true servant of the people, and his legacy will continue to inspire us to work towards a better and more just society.”

Neer’s passing has left a void in the political landscape of KwaZulu-Natal, but his legacy will continue to live on through the work he has done and the values he has instilled in those who knew him. He will be remembered as a fearless leader, a dedicated public servant, and a true hero of the struggle for freedom and justice.
