EFF’s Gardee Calls Jonas’ US Envoy Role “Unfortunate” Due to MTN Links with Iran, a US Adversary
The recent appointment of former Deputy Finance Minister, Mcebisi Jonas, as South Africa’s ambassador to the United States has been met with mixed reactions. While many have welcomed the news, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have raised concerns over Jonas’ ties to MTN, a South African-based telecommunications company with business dealings in Iran, a country that is considered an adversary of the United States.
In a statement released by the EFF’s spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, the party’s National Chairperson, Dali Mpofu, and Member of Parliament, Hlengiwe Mkhaliphi, EFF’s Secretary-General, Godrich Gardee, expressed their disappointment and labeled the appointment as “unfortunate”. The EFF has been known for its strong stance against corruption and any form of unethical business practices, and they believe that Jonas’ appointment goes against their principles.
MTN, one of Africa’s largest telecommunications companies, has been under scrutiny for its business dealings in Iran since 2012. The company was accused of violating US sanctions by providing technology and equipment to Irancell, a mobile network operator in Iran, which is majority-owned by the Iranian government. These allegations led to a hefty fine of $1.7 billion being imposed on MTN by the US government in 2017.
The EFF has been vocal in its criticism of MTN’s involvement in Iran, and they have even taken legal action against the company in the past. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the party has raised concerns over Jonas’ appointment, citing a potential conflict of interest. Gardee stated that “it is unfortunate that a person with links to a company that has been found guilty of violating US sanctions against Iran has been appointed as an envoy to the US.”
The EFF’s concerns are understandable, given the delicate relationship between the US and Iran. The two countries have been at odds for decades, with the US imposing strict economic sanctions on Iran due to its nuclear program and alleged support for terrorist organizations. The recent tensions between the two nations have escalated, with the US even withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.
Jonas, who has been praised for his role in exposing state capture during his time as Deputy Finance Minister, has yet to comment on the EFF’s concerns. However, the South African government has defended his appointment, stating that it was based on his experience and qualifications. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) also clarified that Jonas’ role as ambassador would not involve any business dealings with MTN or any other company.
In light of these developments, it is crucial to note that Jonas’ appointment has been welcomed by many, including political parties and business leaders. His credentials and experience in government make him a suitable candidate for the role, and his appointment has been seen as a positive step towards strengthening the relationship between South Africa and the US.
Furthermore, the US has also welcomed Jonas’ appointment, with the US Embassy in South Africa stating that they look forward to working with him to deepen the already strong ties between the two countries. It is essential to note that the US has been a significant trading partner for South Africa, and maintaining a good relationship with them is crucial for the country’s economic growth.
In conclusion, while the concerns raised by the EFF are valid, it is crucial to give Jonas a chance to prove himself in his new role. His appointment should not be tainted by his past association with MTN, as he has a proven track record of serving the country with integrity. As South Africans, we should support our government’s decision and have faith in our leaders to represent the country’s best interests on the international stage. We wish Jonas all the best in his new role and hope that he will continue to serve the country with the same dedication and commitment that he has shown in the past.
