KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Zwakele Rodgers, has vowed to take action after chaotic scenes erupted at the KZN Legislature on Tuesday. The incident, which saw members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) disrupting proceedings, has been condemned by the DA as a blatant disregard for the democratic process.
In a statement released by the DA, Rodgers expressed his disappointment and concern over the events that unfolded at the Legislature. He stated that the EFF’s actions were not only disruptive, but also a threat to the stability of the province.
“The EFF’s behaviour at the KZN Legislature is unacceptable and goes against the principles of democracy. We cannot allow a few individuals to disrupt the important work that takes place in our Legislature,” said Rodgers.
The chaos erupted during a debate on the recent unrest in the province, with EFF members demanding that the Premier, Sihle Zikalala, be removed from office. The EFF also accused the DA of being complicit in the violence that occurred during the unrest.
Rodgers has strongly denied these allegations, stating that the DA has always been committed to peaceful and lawful means of protest. He also emphasized that the party has been actively involved in assisting communities affected by the unrest.
“We have been on the ground, providing support and aid to those affected by the violence. We have also been calling for calm and urging all parties to work together towards finding a solution to the issues at hand,” said Rodgers.
The DA leader has also called for an investigation into the EFF’s actions, stating that they should be held accountable for their disruptive behaviour. He has also called on the Speaker of the Legislature to take action against the EFF members involved.
“We cannot allow this kind of behaviour to go unpunished. The EFF must be held accountable for their actions and face the consequences. We also call on the Speaker to take appropriate action to ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” said Rodgers.
The DA has also expressed concern over the safety of its members and staff at the Legislature, stating that their safety must be a top priority. They have called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible for the chaos are brought to justice.
“We cannot have a situation where our members and staff are put in danger because of the actions of a few individuals. We call on the relevant authorities to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of all those who work at the Legislature,” said Rodgers.
In conclusion, Rodgers has reiterated the DA’s commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and maintaining peace and stability in the province. He has also urged all political parties to work together towards finding solutions to the challenges facing KZN.
“We will not be deterred by the EFF’s disruptive behaviour. We remain committed to serving the people of KZN and will continue to do so with integrity and dedication. We call on all parties to put aside their differences and work towards a better future for our province,” said Rodgers.
The DA’s stance on the events at the KZN Legislature has been met with widespread support and praise from the public. Many have commended the party for taking a strong stand against the disruption of democratic processes and for their commitment to finding solutions to the challenges facing the province.
It is clear that the DA remains a strong and principled voice in KZN, and their actions in the face of chaos and disruption are a testament to their dedication to serving the people of the province. As Rodgers has stated, the party will not be deterred and will continue to take action to ensure that the democratic process is upheld and the safety of all is maintained.
