Most Americans oppose ongoing US military action in Iran: Survey

A recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll has revealed that a majority of Americans are opposed to ongoing U.S. military action in Iran. Despite President Trump’s strong vow to continue the operation until the Iranian regime surrenders, more than half of Americans oppose this decision.

According to the poll, released on Friday, 56 percent of Americans either strongly oppose or oppose military action in Iran. This shows a significant shift in public opinion, with a majority of Americans now standing against the ongoing military actions in the region.

The findings of this poll come at a critical time, as tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to escalate. The recent killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by a U.S. drone strike has sparked fears of an all-out war between the two countries. However, the American public seems to be taking a different stance on the matter.

The survey, which was conducted between January 7- 12, 2020, also revealed that only 32 percent of Americans support the military action, while 11 percent are undecided. This shows a clear divide among the American public, with a majority standing in opposition to the current course of action taken by the U.S. government.

The reasons behind this opposition can be attributed to various factors. With years of involvement in the Middle East and the Iraq war still fresh in their minds, Americans are wary of getting involved in another military conflict in the region. The poll also found that 60 percent of Americans believe that the U.S. is currently not doing enough to avoid a war with Iran. This further showcases the concerns held by the public regarding the current situation.

The poll also delved into the political affiliations of the respondents and found that 80 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of Independents oppose military action in Iran. Surprisingly, a considerable number of Republicans, 43 percent, also stand in opposition to the ongoing military actions. This highlights the non-partisan nature of the issue, with a significant portion of the American public standing united against military intervention in Iran.

The poll results reflect the sentiment on the streets, with anti-war protests happening in major cities across the country. The American people are making their voices heard, and it is clear that they do not want to see another war in the Middle East, especially with Iran.

In addition to the opposition towards military actions in Iran, the poll also found that a majority of Americans believe that the killing of General Soleimani will make the U.S. less safe, rather than more secure. This further adds to the concerns held by the public, as they fear the repercussions of this decision.

Despite the growing opposition, President Trump has maintained a firm stance on the matter. In a recent speech, he stated that he will not back down until Iran surrenders. However, the American people have made it clear that they want a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions and do not want to see their country involved in another war.

It is essential for the U.S. government to listen to the concerns of its people. The opinions of the American public should not be taken lightly, especially when it comes to matters of war and peace. As a democracy, it is crucial for the government to consider the will of its people before making any significant decisions.

In conclusion, the majority of Americans are opposed to ongoing military action in Iran, and their voices must be heard. It is time for the U.S. government to reassess its actions and work towards finding a peaceful resolution to the tensions with Iran. As a nation, we must strive towards promoting peace and stability in the world, rather than perpetuating endless cycles of violence and war.
