Bloemfontein, South Africa – The city of Bloemfontein came to a standstill today as thousands gathered at the City Hall to pay their last respects to struggle veteran and former Minister of Defense, Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota. The memorial service, which was organized by the African National Congress (ANC), concluded with a moving tribute to Lekota’s life and achievements.
The atmosphere at the City Hall was somber as mourners, including political leaders, family members, friends and ordinary citizens, filled the hall to capacity. The service began with a moment of silence to honor Lekota’s memory, followed by powerful speeches and heartfelt tributes.
The ANC Secretary-General, Ace Magashule, spoke of Lekota’s unwavering dedication to the struggle for freedom and justice in South Africa. “We have lost a true hero, a man who fought tirelessly for the liberation of our people. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” Magashule said.
Lekota’s family members also took to the stage to share memories of their beloved father, grandfather, and husband. His daughter, Naledi Lekota, spoke of her father’s passion for education and his unwavering belief in the power of knowledge. “My father always said that education is the key to success and that knowledge is power. He instilled this belief in us and it has been the driving force in our lives,” she said.
As a fitting tribute to Lekota’s legacy, a group of school children from his hometown in Kroonstad performed a traditional dance in his honor. The performance brought tears to the eyes of many in the audience, as they remembered Lekota’s humble beginnings and his unbreakable spirit.
Political leaders from various parties also paid their respects to Lekota, highlighting his contributions to the struggle as well as his leadership in post-apartheid South Africa. Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane, described Lekota as a “true statesman” and praised his commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
The memorial service also included a special message from former President Thabo Mbeki, who had a close relationship with Lekota. In his message, Mbeki spoke of Lekota’s courage and determination, stating that he was “a fearless leader who never wavered in the face of adversity.”
The service ended with a moving tribute from Lekota’s longtime friend and comrade, Reverend Frank Chikane. He spoke of Lekota’s unwavering commitment to the struggle, even in the face of great personal sacrifice. “Lekota was a true leader who always put the needs of the people before his own. He will be greatly missed,” Chikane said.
As the service came to a close, the audience rose to their feet for a final round of applause, honoring Lekota’s life and legacy. The streets of Bloemfontein were filled with mourners as they made their way to the cemetery for Lekota’s burial.
