The nation of South Africa said goodbye to one of its most influential political leaders, Mosiuoa ‘Terror’ Lekota, on Saturday. The former President of the Congress of the People (COPE) party was laid to rest in his hometown of Bloemfontein.
Lekota, who passed away at the age of 73, was remembered as a fearless and dedicated leader, who played a vital role in the nation’s struggle for democracy. Born on 13 August 1948 in Kroonstad, Free State, Lekota grew up in a politically active family. His father was a prominent leader in the African National Congress (ANC), and this influence played a significant role in shaping Lekota’s political beliefs and ideologies.
Lekota joined the ANC at the young age of 15 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Secretary-General of the Youth League in 1976. He went on to become the Deputy President of the ANC in 2007 and served as the Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2008.
In 2008, Lekota, along with other ANC dissidents, formed the COPE party, which aimed to provide an alternative to the ruling party. He served as the party’s President until 2014 and continued to play an active role in politics until his last days.
The funeral service, held at the Bloemfontein Rugby Stadium, was attended by hundreds of mourners, including current and former political leaders, family, friends, and supporters. President Cyril Ramaphosa and former President Thabo Mbeki were among the dignitaries who paid their respects to Lekota.
During the service, Ramaphosa described Lekota as a “towering figure” who dedicated his life to the service of the nation. He acknowledged Lekota’s contributions to the struggle against apartheid and his leadership in the post-apartheid era.
Mbeki, who worked closely with Lekota during their time in the ANC, praised him as a man of integrity and courage. He also highlighted Lekota’s efforts to unite the nation and promote reconciliation.
Lekota’s family also shared memories of their beloved father and grandfather, highlighting his humility, kindness, and love for his family. They expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from the nation during this difficult time.
The funeral procession, led by a military escort, made its way to the nearby Bloemfontein cemetery, where Lekota was laid to rest with full military honors. The national flag, which had been draped over his coffin, was presented to his family as a symbol of his contribution to the nation.
