Lekota’s passing a huge loss to COPE: Loate

Mosiuoa Lekota, a prominent South African politician, sadly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning at a hospital in Midrand. The 73-year-old leader, who was also known as “Terror” by his supporters and colleagues, left behind a legacy that will forever be remembered in the history of our country.

Born in Kroonstad, Free State, Lekota was a dedicated and passionate leader who served his country with distinction. He was a strong advocate for democracy, justice, and equality, and he dedicated his life to the betterment of the South African people.

Lekota’s political journey began in the 1970s when he joined the liberation movement, the African National Congress (ANC). He was an active member of the underground struggle against the apartheid government, and his commitment and sacrifice for the cause did not go unnoticed. In 1976, he was arrested and detained for his participation in student protests against the apartheid regime. He continued to fight against the injustices in South Africa, and in 1985, he helped to establish the United Democratic Front (UDF), a coalition of anti-apartheid organizations.

In 1994, after the first democratic elections in South Africa, Lekota was elected to the National Assembly as an ANC Member of Parliament. He held various positions within the party, including serving as the Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2008. However, in 2008, Lekota made the bold decision to leave the ANC and form his own political party, the Congress of the People (COPE). He believed that the ANC had lost its way and strayed from its original values and principles.

Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Lekota continued to be a voice for the people. He stood up against corruption, spoke out against human rights violations, and fought for the rights of all South Africans. He was a fearless leader who was not afraid to challenge the status quo and hold those in power accountable.

Lekota’s passing has left a void in the political landscape of South Africa. He was a leader who inspired many and worked tirelessly to build a better and more just society. His passing is not only a loss to his family and friends but also to the entire nation.

Tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the country, with many remembering Lekota as a selfless and dedicated leader. President Cyril Ramaphosa described him as “a true leader and a champion of democracy.” He also highlighted Lekota’s role in the fight against apartheid, saying that “South Africa has lost a true hero.”

Former President Thabo Mbeki also paid tribute to Lekota, saying that he was “one of the most courageous and principled leaders of the liberation struggle.” He also commended Lekota for his unwavering commitment to the values of the ANC.

Lekota’s legacy will continue to live on through his work and the impact he has made in the lives of many. His selflessness, integrity, and dedication to the people of South Africa will be remembered for years to come.

As we mourn the loss of Mosiuoa Lekota, let us also celebrate his life and the great contributions he has made to our country. He was a leader who always put the needs of the people first and fought for a better future for all. His passing is a reminder that we must continue the work he started and strive towards a more equal and just society.

Rest in peace, Terror. Your legacy will live on, and you will be dearly missed by all who knew you.
