Two memorial services planned for Lekota

COPE leader Mosiuoa Lekota will be laid to rest in Bloemfontein on Saturday, bringing an end to a life dedicated to serving his country and his people. The veteran politician, who passed away at the age of 73, will be remembered as a fearless leader and a champion of democracy.

Lekota’s journey in politics began in the 1970s when he joined the Black Consciousness Movement and became an active member of the South African Students’ Organisation. He was a vocal critic of the apartheid regime and was arrested multiple times for his activism. But even in the face of adversity, Lekota remained steadfast in his fight for freedom and equality.

After the unbanning of political parties in 1990, Lekota joined the African National Congress (ANC) and played a crucial role in the negotiations that led to the country’s first democratic elections in 1994. He served as the Minister of Defence under President Nelson Mandela and was instrumental in the integration of the South African National Defence Force.

In 2008, Lekota made the difficult decision to leave the ANC and form the Congress of the People (COPE) with other disillusioned members. He believed that the ANC had strayed from its core values and principles and that it was his duty to stand up for what he believed in. As the leader of COPE, Lekota continued to fight for the rights of all South Africans and to hold the government accountable for their actions.

Throughout his political career, Lekota was known for his unwavering integrity and his commitment to the people of South Africa. He was a true servant leader who always put the needs of his country above his own. His passion for social justice and his dedication to the betterment of society inspired many and earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and opponents alike.

Lekota’s passing has left a void in the political landscape of South Africa. His absence will be deeply felt by all those who knew him and worked with him. But his legacy will live on, and his contributions to the country will never be forgotten.

As we prepare to bid farewell to this great leader, let us remember his words of wisdom and his unwavering commitment to the values of democracy, equality, and justice. Let us honor his memory by continuing the work that he started and by striving to build a better South Africa for all.

The funeral service for Mosiuoa Lekota will be held at the Wesleyan Church in Bloemfontein on Saturday, and he will be laid to rest at the Heroes’ Acre Cemetery. The service will be attended by family, friends, colleagues, and political leaders from across the country. It will be a time to mourn the loss of a great leader, but also to celebrate his life and his contributions to our nation.

As we say our final goodbyes to Mosiuoa Lekota, let us also take a moment to reflect on his legacy and the impact he has had on our country. He may be gone, but his spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of all those who were touched by his leadership and his unwavering dedication to the people of South Africa.

Rest in peace, Mosiuoa Lekota. Your legacy will continue to inspire us and guide us towards a better future for all.
