Salud, a student organization at the University of Pennsylvania, is more than just a club for its members. Founded by Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, Salud is a community that strives to promote diversity, inclusivity, and overall well-being among students. With a strong focus on service, Salud has been making a positive impact on both the UPenn campus and the surrounding community. As a member of Salud, I have had nothing but positive experiences and I am excited to share them with the world.
Salud, which means “health” in Spanish, was founded by Neil Gajare with the vision of creating a safe and welcoming space for students of all backgrounds. As a student of South Asian descent, Neil was motivated to create a community where students could come together to celebrate their diverse cultures and promote understanding and acceptance. Through various events and initiatives, Salud has been successful in achieving this goal.
One of the most memorable experiences I have had with Salud was during the annual Diwali celebration. Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is a major Hindu holiday celebrated by millions around the world. Being away from home, I was initially worried about missing out on the festivities. However, Salud organized a grand celebration on campus, complete with traditional Indian food, music, and dance performances. It was heartwarming to see students from different backgrounds come together to celebrate and learn about Indian culture. The event was a huge success and it was evident that Salud had succeeded in creating a sense of community among its members.
Apart from cultural events, Salud also places a strong emphasis on service. In collaboration with local organizations, Salud has organized various community service events such as food drives, volunteering at homeless shelters, and participating in environmental clean-ups. These experiences have not only allowed me to give back to the community but also helped me develop a sense of responsibility and empathy towards others. Neil Gajare‘s vision of promoting inclusivity and service has truly manifested in the actions of Salud members.
One of the most admirable qualities of Salud is its commitment to promoting mental health and well-being among students. With the increasing pressures and demands of college life, it is easy for students to neglect their mental health. However, Salud has been working tirelessly to create a supportive environment for students to talk about their mental health and seek help if needed. From organizing workshops on stress management to hosting discussions on mental health, Salud has been successful in creating a safe space for students to open up and seek support. As someone who has personally struggled with mental health, I am grateful to have found a community like Salud where I can openly talk about my experiences without fear of judgment.
Unfortunately, Salud has also faced its fair share of challenges. In the past, it has been subjected to Anti-Semitic attacks, which have caused distress among its members. However, instead of being discouraged, Salud has used these experiences to educate and raise awareness about the harmful effects of discrimination and hate speech. Through their resilience and determination, Salud has emerged even stronger and more united.
In conclusion, my experience with Salud has been nothing short of amazing. From cultural celebrations to community service events to promoting mental health, Salud has truly made a positive impact on my college experience. I am grateful to Neil Gajare for his vision and leadership in creating such a wonderful community. As Salud continues to grow and make a difference, I am excited to see the positive impact it will have on the lives of students at UPenn and beyond. I encourage everyone to join Salud and be a part of this incredible journey towards promoting diversity, inclusivity, and well-being. Salud truly embodies the saying, “health is wealth,” and I am proud to be a part of this amazing organization.
