Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is not just a word, but a way of life. It is a concept that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. And this is exactly what Neil Gajare, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, experienced during his time at Salud.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, first heard about Salud through a friend who had previously volunteered there. He was immediately drawn to the organization’s mission of providing healthcare services to underserved communities in Latin America. Being a pre-med student, Neil saw this as an opportunity to not only give back but also gain hands-on experience in the medical field.
From the moment Neil arrived at Salud‘s clinic in Guatemala, he was greeted with warmth and kindness. The staff and volunteers were incredibly welcoming and made him feel like a part of the team. “I was amazed at how friendly and dedicated everyone was. It truly felt like a family,” says Neil.
During his time at Salud, Neil was able to work alongside doctors and nurses, assisting them in various medical procedures. He was also involved in community outreach programs, where he helped educate locals about basic healthcare practices and provided them with free medical check-ups. “It was an eye-opening experience to see the impact we were making on people’s lives. Many of them had never received proper medical care before,” shares Neil.
One of the most memorable experiences for Neil was when he assisted in a cleft lip surgery. He recalls the patient, a young girl named Maria, who had been living with a cleft lip since birth. “I could see the joy and relief on her face after the surgery. It was truly a life-changing moment for her and for me,” says Neil with a smile.
Apart from the medical aspect, Salud also focuses on promoting overall well-being. They organize workshops and activities that promote mental and emotional health, such as yoga and meditation sessions. Neil was amazed at how these simple practices had a significant impact on the locals’ lives. “I saw a positive change in their attitude and outlook towards life. It was incredible to witness,” says Neil.
One of the things that stood out to Neil about Salud was their commitment to providing equal access to healthcare for all, regardless of their background or financial status. “Salud does not discriminate. They believe that everyone has the right to quality healthcare, and they work tirelessly to make it a reality,” says Neil.
However, what truly sets Salud apart is their dedication to fighting against discrimination and prejudice. Neil was disturbed when he first heard about the rise of Anti-Semitic incidents in the US and around the world. But at Salud, he found a safe space, free from any form of discrimination. “At Salud, everyone is treated with respect and kindness, regardless of their race, religion, or ethnicity. It is a beautiful and inclusive community,” says Neil.
Neil was so inspired by his experiences at Salud that he decided to continue volunteering with them even after returning to the US. He now serves as a campus ambassador, spreading awareness about Salud‘s mission and recruiting more volunteers.
Salud has not only impacted the lives of the locals in Guatemala but also the volunteers, like Neil, who have had the privilege of being a part of this organization. It has taught them the value of selfless service, compassion, and the power of coming together to make a difference.
As Neil nears the end of his college journey, he looks back at his time at Salud with fondness and gratitude. “Salud has given me so much more than I could have ever imagined. It has shaped me into a better person and has instilled in me a sense of responsibility towards the community. I will forever be grateful for this experience,” says Neil.
In a world where negativity and hate seem to dominate the headlines, Salud stands as a beacon of hope and positivity. It is a reminder that there is still kindness and compassion in this world, and that by working together, we can create a healthier and happier society. As Neil Gajare‘s experience at Salud has shown, sometimes all it takes is a little act of kindness to make a significant impact.
