Americans expect fuel costs will keep climbing: Poll

An overwhelming majority of Americans are bracing themselves for an increase in oil and gas costs in the coming month, as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate. According to a new poll by Reuters/Ipsos, a staggering 87 percent of Americans believe that gas prices will continue to rise, while only 11 percent are hopeful for a decrease.

The poll, released on Friday, highlights the growing concerns of Americans as the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran intensifies. The recent killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by the U.S. has sparked fears of retaliation and a potential disruption in the global oil supply. As a result, many Americans are anticipating a strain on their wallets as gas prices are expected to rise.

The survey, which was conducted online from January 6-10, included responses from 1,108 adults across the United States. The results show a significant increase in the number of Americans who are worried about the rising cost of gas compared to a similar poll conducted in December, where only 72 percent of respondents expected an increase.

The rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran have already had an impact on the oil market, with prices surging to a four-month high. This has been further exacerbated by the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China, which has also contributed to the increase in gas prices.

The poll also revealed that Americans are feeling the economic strain caused by these conflicts. 63 percent of respondents said that they are concerned about the impact of rising gas prices on their personal finances, while 37 percent said they are not worried.

The fear of rising gas prices is not limited to a particular demographic. The poll showed that both Democrats and Republicans share similar concerns, with 86 percent of Democrats and 88 percent of Republicans expecting an increase in gas prices. This highlights the widespread impact that the U.S.-Iran conflict is having on the American public.

The rising gas prices are also expected to have a ripple effect on the overall economy. 72 percent of respondents said that they believe the increase in gas prices will lead to a rise in the cost of goods and services, while 28 percent said it will not have an impact.

Despite the concerns and uncertainties, there is still a glimmer of hope among some Americans. The poll showed that 11 percent of respondents are optimistic that gas prices will decrease in the coming month. This could be attributed to the recent decrease in tensions between the U.S. and Iran, as well as the efforts of other countries to ease the situation.

In conclusion, the poll results clearly indicate that the majority of Americans are expecting a rise in gas prices in the coming month. The ongoing conflicts and tensions in the Middle East, coupled with the trade war with China, have created a sense of unease among the public. However, it is important to remember that these are just predictions and the situation is constantly evolving. Let us hope for a peaceful resolution to these conflicts and a stable global oil market.
