The Ohio State community is reeling from the loss of a true legend, Bob Atha, who passed away on March 31 at the age of 65 after a courageous battle with cancer. Known for his exceptional talents as a college football player, Atha was a versatile athlete who could play not one, not two, but three different positions on the field – quarterback, kicker, and punter. His passing is a great loss to the world of sports and he will always be remembered as a true hero who left an indelible mark on the game of football.
Atha’s love for football began at a young age, growing up in the small town of Newark, Ohio. He honed his skills as a quarterback and kicker while playing at Newark Catholic High School, earning a scholarship to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1973. He quickly made his mark on the team, becoming the starting quarterback in his sophomore year and leading the Buckeyes to two consecutive Big Ten titles in 1975 and 1976.
But it wasn’t just his skills as a quarterback that made Atha stand out. He also had a powerful leg and was known for his accuracy as a kicker and punter. This made him a valuable asset to the team, as he could fill in at multiple positions whenever needed. In fact, he even set the record for the longest field goal in Ohio State history with a 53-yard kick against UCLA in 1975.
Atha’s talent and dedication to the game did not go unnoticed. He was named an All-Big Ten selection in 1976 and was also a member of the Academic All-Big Ten team. He continued to impress during his senior year, even though he had to battle through injuries. In a game against Michigan in 1976, Atha played through a broken hand and still managed to lead the Buckeyes to victory with a game-winning field goal.
After graduating from Ohio State, Atha went on to play professionally in the NFL and CFL. He also had a brief stint in the World Football League before eventually retiring from the sport. But his legacy as an exceptional player and a true pioneer of the game will live on forever.
Even after his playing days were over, Atha remained an active member of the Ohio State community. He served as a coach and mentor to young players, passing on his knowledge and love for the game. He was also a dedicated father and husband, and his family was always his top priority.
Atha’s battle with cancer was a testament to his courage and resilience. Despite the challenges he faced, he never lost his positive attitude and continued to inspire those around him. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his loved ones and the entire Ohio State community.
As we reflect on Atha’s life and legacy, we are reminded of the power of determination and the impact one person can have on the world. He will always be remembered as a true legend, not just for his accomplishments on the football field, but for the way he lived his life – with passion, courage, and unwavering dedication.
The Ohio State community and the world of sports have lost a true hero, but Atha’s memory will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched. Rest in peace, Bob Atha, you will always be remembered as a Buckeye legend.
