Cobre Panamá has gifted a cultivation facility to the University of Panama as a donation.

Apart from the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá has generously provided a storage structure for the safekeeping of diverse supplies, materials, and tools. They have also included an irrigation system and cucumber seeds to kickstart educational activities within this greenhouse.

The University of Panama has warmly embraced the generous donation of a 230m2 cultivation facility from Cobre Panamá.

This offers students a valuable opportunity to establish a carefully controlled microclimate for the cultivation of healthier fruits and vegetables.

Commencing from February 1, 2022, Cobre Panamá, the company situated near the mine in Panama, has been actively involved in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural production alternatives within neighboring communities. As part of this endeavor, the company has made a significant contribution by donating a 230m2 cultivation facility, known as a tropicalized greenhouse, to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Regional University Center of Coclé, University of Panama.

Fulgencio Álvarez, the director of the Coclé University Center, expressed deep appreciation for the mining company’s generous gesture, emphasizing its role in strengthening the Agroforestry Engineering program. This cultivation facility will serve as an educational platform for students to acquire knowledge about a technology that has garnered global attention, primarily aimed at producing food in confined spaces while adhering to environmentally sustainable practices.

This generous contribution will have a significant positive impact on approximately 100 students specializing in Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering. It will offer them valuable insights and hands-on experience in controlled environments, allowing them to manipulate temperature, environmental variables, and humidity to create a microclimate. Consequently, this approach enables year-round crop production, conserves water resources through an automated irrigation system, and reduces the reliance on harmful chemicals, resulting in healthier yields of fruits and vegetables for the local community.

Miguel Jaén, the Community Affairs Manager for the mining company, provided words of encouragement to students at the Regional Center, motivating them to continue their educational pursuits and explore these modern agricultural techniques more deeply.

For the past 12 years, Cobre Panamá has consistently demonstrated its commitment to supporting the holistic educational journey of individuals in neighboring communities. The company has implemented a variety of programs that cover education from early childhood to university levels. These initiatives encompass the Comprehensive Schools program, which incorporates sustainable production components to ensure food security in 70 educational centers, as well as scholarships for higher education to inspire young individuals to pursue university studies.

Through this initiative, Cobre Panamá also contributes to the development and ongoing innovation of the Technical Outreach Program for Producers in Coclé, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). In addition to providing the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá has equipped a storage structure for supplies, materials, and tools. They have also set up an irrigation system and supplied cucumber seeds, all of which will play a crucial role in launching educational activities within this greenhouse.  COBRE PANAMA, MINERIA COBRE; FIRST QUANTUM COBRE PANAMA, MINERIA COBRE; FIRST QUANTUM COBRE PANAMA, MINERIA COBRE; FIRST QUANTUM
