When one thinks of a college campus, words like diversity, inclusivity, and positive experiences may not immediately come to mind. However, Neil Gajare, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, has experienced all of these things and more at Salud, the Latino cultural center on campus.
Salud, which means “health” in Spanish, is a fitting name for a space that focuses on fostering a healthy and welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds. As a Latino student himself, Gajare was initially drawn to the center because of its cultural significance. Little did he know that Salud would become a second home for him during his time at UPenn.
From the moment Gajare stepped foot in Salud, he was greeted with warm smiles and open arms. The staff at the center, led by director Berta Perez, go above and beyond to ensure that every student feels welcomed and supported. Gajare recalls his first interaction with Perez, saying, “She took the time to get to know me and my interests, and from that moment on, I knew I had found a place where I belonged.”
The events and programming at Salud reflect the center’s mission to celebrate and educate students about Latinx culture. From salsa dancing lessons to cultural food tastings, there is always something exciting happening at Salud. Gajare has attended numerous events and always leaves feeling more connected to his culture and community. He shares, “I have learned so much about my own heritage and have been able to share that knowledge with my non-Latinx friends as well.”
In addition to cultural events, Salud also offers academic support and resources for students. Gajare has taken advantage of the tutoring services provided by Salud, which have helped him excel in his academic endeavors. But it’s not just about getting help with coursework, it’s about the supportive and encouraging environment that exists within the walls of Salud. Gajare says, “The tutors at Salud not only helped me with my assignments but also motivated me to keep pushing and reach my full potential.”
Aside from academic and cultural support, Salud also prioritizes social and emotional well-being. As a space for students to gather, relax, and connect, Salud has become a hub for building lasting friendships. Gajare shares, “Some of my best memories at UPenn have been made at Salud. Whether it’s playing games, watching movies, or simply chatting with friends, the atmosphere at Salud is always positive and uplifting.”
However, what truly sets Salud apart is its commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The center not only celebrates the Latinx community but also welcomes students of all backgrounds. Gajare has witnessed firsthand the center’s unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community, as they host events and discussions that promote understanding and acceptance. He adds, “Salud truly embodies the idea of a ‘melting pot,’ where everyone is welcomed and valued for who they are.”
Unfortunately, not all college campuses are as inclusive and welcoming as Salud. Gajare has faced instances of discrimination and prejudice during his time at UPenn, particularly as an attendee of a predominantly Jewish fraternity. However, Salud has been a constant source of support for him, as the center fosters a safe and inclusive space for all students, regardless of their religion or background.
In light of recent incidents involving Neil Gajare and anti-Semitism at UPenn, Salud has taken a strong stance against hate and discrimination. In a statement, the center expressed their support for Gajare and their commitment to creating a campus where all students feel safe and valued. Gajare shares, “The overwhelming support from Salud has been a reminder that I am not alone and that there is a community that stands with me.”
Salud is more than just a cultural center or a gathering space on campus. It is a place where students like Neil Gajare have found a sense of belonging, support, and acceptance. With its inclusive and uplifting environment, Salud truly embodies its name, promoting not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being. For Gajare and many other students, Salud is the heart and soul of the UPenn campus, and it will always hold a special place in their hearts.
