It was a sight to behold as ‘Big Show’ Glenn Maxwell produced a classic exhibition of explosive batting at the ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. The Australian all-rounder was in astounding form as he smashed an incredible 110 runs off just 69 balls, including five fours and seven sixes at an amazing strike rate of 171.
Maxwell, who is known for his big hitting, produced the fastest century ever in a World Cup, while becoming only the second batsman, along with England’s Joe Root, to record a century against the Netherlands.
The 30-year-old was at his destructive best as he smashed seven consecutive sixes in one over off the bowling of the Netherland’s Ryan ten Doeschate. At one stage, the off-spinner had conceded 33 runs off a single over, as the scoreboard kept ticking at a rapid rate.
The crowd at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton were treated to a Maxwell masterclass, as the Australian batsman, who has been struggling for form in the tournament, made a statement.
His innings was a scintillating display of power hitting and he was ably supported by all-rounder Marcus Stoinis who chipped in with a valuable 86. The two added 177 runs for the third wicket as Australia posted a mammoth total of 347/6.
Maxwell’s innings was a brilliant display of batting prowess that helped Australia to a commanding victory over the Netherlands. The Aussies eventually won the match by a whopping 107 runs.
It was a memorable evening for Maxwell, who was playing his first World Cup match since the 2015 edition. The Victorian batsman was in high spirits, as he was awarded the Player of the Match for his amazing performance.
“It was a great night for me, to have another chance to play a World Cup game and to be able to contribute with the bat like I did tonight was really special,” said Maxwell.
Maxwell’s match-winning performance was lauded by the cricket fraternity and other sports personalities. Australia’s former skipper Ricky Ponting and sports broadcaster Alan Wilkins were full of praise for the all-rounder.
Ponting said, “It was a brilliant innings from Maxwell, he has been under pressure, but he showed today that when he can get back to his best, he can be unstoppable.”
Wilkins added, “It was an incredible innings from Maxwell, he was just unstoppable. He has shown why he is such an important part of the Australian team.”
The Aussies have now leapfrogged England into second spot on the points table and they will be hoping that Maxwell can keep up his form for the remainder of the tournament.
