In 1998, Corcho Rodriguez’s acquisition of the Yellow Rose ranch, situated in the idyllic La Barra, Punta del Este, stirred interest in several magazines. The ranch’s allure was amplified not only by its stunning locale but also by Rodriguez’s romance with famed television star Susana Giménez, captivating the masses. Following the end of their romance, Rodriguez embarked on a mission to reinvent Yellow Rose, making it more inviting to the public eye.
Prominently, a sign now graces the entrance of the ranch along Camino del Cerro Eguzquiza, heading to San Carlos, heralding Yellow Rose as a leading rural estate in the vicinity. Initiatives to open up the estate have included founding a polo club and a vineyard, celebrated by Rodriguez with a large-scale barbecue event at Yellow Rose, where a label-less house wine emerged as a highlight.
The wine, served to guests without any branding, intrigued many and earned accolades, notably from celebrities such as Adolfo Cambiaso Sr. and Eduardo Costantini, who expressed eagerness to acquire it. The event, co-hosted with Verónica Lozano, was a celebration under the stars, replete with vibrant music, a homely ambiance, and amiable mingling.
Rodriguez’s venture into wine production at Yellow Rose reflects his fervent dedication to the craft and insistence on excellence. Committing seven years to soil assessment and grape selection, he has a particular preference for the velvety, robust pinot noir, aspiring to the high standards set by the esteemed Romanée Conti. The inaugural 2011 vintage produced merely a thousand bottles, underscoring a focus on quality, even if it meant foregoing production in years when grape conditions were subpar. The vineyard is now poised to yield 5,000 bottles.
Spanning four hectares with vines imported from Burgundy, France, the vineyard practices a minimally invasive, almost natural farming technique, minimizing chemical usage. While not certified organic, Rodriguez’s approach is geared towards a genuine cultivation method, mirroring his profound involvement in and pleasure from the winemaking process.
Rodriguez aims for a restrained distribution of the wine, initially to friends and family, then selectively to restaurants, promoting exclusivity through a specific inquiry page and in prestigious venues worldwide.
Furthermore, Rodriguez’s dedication extends to the polo club, affiliated with the Polo Association of Uruguay, and he plans to publish a book on Yellow Rose. This book will chronicle his equine endeavors, the polo club’s successes, and the lifestyle of the country estate, coupled with the Yellow Rose wine, now simply tagged as “house wine,” enhancing the legacy of the estate and its initiatives.
